Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Get the Working Moon Lantern

Baldur’s Gate 3 showcases numerous challenging quests and missions that can perplex players if they don’t know the right approach of playing it. Fortunately, most of these situations can be solved easily and effortlessly.

One of the particularly challenging quests involves navigating through the darkest part of the Shadow-Cursed Lands. To overcome it, you will need a Moon Lantern, but the one available in the under dark is broken.

If you come across a Moon Lantern with a Pixie dead inside it, you can revive it once you enter Balthazar’s room in Moonrise Towers. This process will transform it into the Shadow Lantern, but remember that it will not protect you from Shadow Curse, still it will allow you to cast the spell Conjure Shadow Lantern Wraith.

Whereabouts of Moon Lantern

While spending your time in getting to know the Underdark, you will come acrossTrue Soul Nere. In order to progress the storyline further, defeating True Soul Nere is important, and then only he will drop a Broken Moon Lantern.

When you speak to Halsin, he explains that Moon Lanterns are used in the Shadow-Cursed Lands to ward off the Shadow Curse. Butthis particular lantern is broken.

Sadly,it cannot be repaired. Progressing further you will get to know that Moon Lanterns are powered by Pixies trapped inside. Pixie will be gone, if a lantern is broken.

Search of a Working Moon Lantern

The only location where you can obtain a functional Moon Lantern is within the Shadow-Cursed Lands. As you go through these lands, ensure that each and everyone carries a torch (only the Shadowheart is the one who doesn’t need to carry it) and make sure to keep your torch on at all times till you discover a method to counteract the Shadow Curse.

Then the moment will come when you will reach at Last Light Inn, and there Isobel will give you a spell to protect against the ShadowCurse.

But make a note that this will not be effective in the darkest areas of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, which brings us to the most important which is we need to get the working moon lantern.

Luckily, the Harpers will guide you to a working one. They will direct you to a spider-like NPC, known as Drider, who possesses a working moon lantern. Kar’niss is the name of this NPC.

If you are willing to finish this NPC, you can use the Spider Lyre, which either drops from Minthara or is given to you if you destroy the Druid’s Grove. Alternatively, you can follow the Harpers and ambush the NPC when he is least expecting it, allowing you to gain the upper hand.

Another option is to speak to him directly and try to persuade him to give you the Lantern. But, if your persuasion attempt did not succeed, he will attack you.

After successfully going through the darkest part of the Shadow Curse, you will encounter at last Balthazar in the Ancient Temple. If you choose to kill him, he will drop a Moon Lantern. But at this point of time or at this stage of the game you no longer need it.

What is the Use of Moon Lantern

In the game there are only three known Moon Lanterns. First one is dropped by True Soul Nere, another you will during the quest to assist the Harpers, and the third is found in Moonrise Towers.

Once you get, thefunctional Moon Lantern, there will be a voice pleading for help. This is point where you will get to know that Pixies are trapped inside each moon lantern.

Be cautious if you are playing as the Dark Urge, as you will be tempted to kill the Pixie, which will make lantern of no use (as explained in the above paragraphs).

You will then have to face the decision to either release the Pixie or use the Moon Lantern for yourself. The most important thing to remember is that you will not be able to survive in the Shadow-Curse Lands without using the Moon Lantern.
