How to Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring

Mohg, Lord of Blood, is an intimidating boss in Elden Ring, and defeating him is a difficult challenge. As the strong version of Mohg, the Omen, he is one of the last obstacles Tarnished players will face.

Mohg also keeps eye at the entrance to the Shado of the Erdtree expansion, making him a necessary hurdle for those curious to explore this new content.

Let’s go through a detailed strategies to locate and defeat Mohg, making sure that you are well prepared for the combat ahead.

Location of Mohg, Lord of Blood

Mohg, Lord of Blood, lives in Mohgwyn Palace. There are two main ways to reach this location. The first method involves going through White Mask Varre’s questline, which can bring you to Mohgwyn Palace relatively early.

The second method is using the teleporter at the Consecrated Snowfield, suitable for those who have reached a higher level. Let’s go through the detailed steps on both methods on accessing Mohgwyn Palace.

Once in the palace, you will find it is a small but risky zone. Traverse the pools of blood and head towards the central mausoleum. From there, go through the tunnels to the top, where you will come across Mohg at the end of an elevator ride just past the Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace.

Strategies to Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood

1. Initial Encounter and Bloodflames

Mohg’s fight consists of two different phases. In the first phase, he is relatively stationary, allowing you to get several hits in if you can get away with his spear attacks and Bloodflame Talons, which leave claw marks in the air.

Bloodflame attacks are particularly dangerous as they cause Blood Loss buildup, quickly draining your health if you step into them.

2. The Ritual Countdown and Bloodboon Ritual

As Mohg’s health deteriorates, he initiates the Ritual Countdown attack. You will see red marks form around your head, counting down from three to one in Latin (“Tres,” “Duo,” “Unus”).

While this countdown is going on, open fire to avoid his spear strikes and seize the opportunity to attack from behind, aiming to break his Poise with heavy attacks.

When Mohg’s health is halved, he changes into his Bloodboon Ritual. He completes the Ritual Countdown three times, reaching in a devastating “Nihil” attack that triggers unavoidable Blood Loss and heals Mohg. This attack repeats twice more, posing a fatal threat to most builds unless mitigated effectively.

3. Surviving Nihil with the Purifying Crystal Tear

To stand against the “Nihil” attack, prepare a Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick. This Tear specifically counters Blood Loss during the Bloodboon Ritual, though it won’t stop Mohg from healing.

Getting the Purifying Crystal Tear involves completing Bloody Finger Hunter Yura’s questline. You must meet Yura at the Second Church of Marika on Altus Plateau and help him defeat Bloody Finger Eleonara.

4. Alternative Strategy: Healing Through Nihil

If you don’t have the Purifying Crystal Tear, you can still survive by healing through the damage. The “Nihil” attack hits strong hard but provides brief intervals between its three casts.

If your Flask of Crimson Tears is increased to +12, you can recover most of your lost health with two charges. Aim to have the maximum of 14 flask charges by collecting more Golden Seeds if important. This method is less efficient but can be effective.

5. Dealing with Mohg’s Winged Attacks

In phase 3, Mohg gets wings and becomes significantly more mobile, making the fight even more difficult. He flies up and descends down with his trident, releasing Bloodflame shoots and longer attack combos. The world becomes more dangerous as Bloodflame patches scatter around.

Staying close to Mohg is important in this phase. Continue attacking strongly, and consider unlocking your camera to keep better track of the world and avoid Bloodflame patches.

Conclusion

By following these strategies, you will be well-equipped to win against Mohg, Lord of Blood, and progress into the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
