1. Sandgate Village
You start at Sandgate Village (meeting Rat Archers and Rat Soldiers on the way there). After defeating these guys, explore and find an altar with a Lambbrew drink, which is useful for upgrades.
Replay your steps to meet Xu Dog, a future quest character, and have him send you off to defeat the frog boss Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw. This battle is completed, allowing to craft medicines. Afterwards you return to the village and face two headed Rat Captains and the Earth Wolf.
Get the boost early game using Absorb Earth Wolf’s spirit. Area ends with defeating the King and Second Prince of Flowing Sands and unlocks the Valley of Despair.
2. Crouching Tiger Temple
Go from Valley of Despair to Crouching Tiger Temple. And of course, pass a spitting Yaoguai and navigate caves before reaching the temple entrance. Waiting up for you is the notorious Tiger Vanguard, dreaded for a sword attack and swift movements.
Learn his attack patterns and aim your dodges on his timing. On victory you receive the Keeness of Tiger and the Rock-Solid spell required to parry into the future. You can exit to Windrest Bridge.
3. Fright Cliff
Sidequests occupy this area. From the Squall Hideout Shrine, where you’ll battle Stone Vanguard, a large, rock boss that summons minions. Resurrect Shigandang, a Yaoguai King which has been hidden away, and fight Stone Vanguard in a rousing show.
There, complete the Buddha’s Eyeball side quest to get powerful abilities along the way. To get the Azure Dust Transformation, you face the mother of Stones and Man-In-Stone and turn into a rock Guai.
4. Yellow Wind Formation
Just past Windrest Bridge, clear out some fast and deadly enemies on a wide bridge. Defeat him, and grab the Old Rattle-Drum, which will open Sandgate Village’s well for a quest later on.
But keep pushing forward to Windseal Gate to fight Gore-Eye Daoist who is a blood shooting Yaoguai Chief. Beating him allows you to go on to the next part.
5. Bottom of the Well
Enter the well, returning to Sandgate Village, and fighting the Mad Tiger. The Immobilize and Azure Dust are great abilities to use here, to make this fight doable. Find a chest after victory to claim Plaguebane Gourd.
6. Kingdom of Sahali
Complete the Drunken Boar side quest to unlock the Kingdom of Sahali. You try and fail to help the Yellow Wind sage defeat giant beetle, Fuban, in this dreamlike desert, before facing Tiger Vanguard.
Fuban is slow, but powerful, and one must be careful when attacking his legs to its weak points. It rewards you with the Wind Tamer for doing battle this well.
7. Cellar
Defeat the Tiger and then Stone Vanguard to unlock the Cellar. You’ll be facing tough enemies inside, such as Civet Sergeants. Here as a vendor, Xu Dog reappears with healing items and upgrades.
Also make sure to pull down the A Pluck of Many spells, which spawns a duplicate of yourself, key to defeating the last boss of the chapter.
8. Yellow Wind Sage
The fight with the Yellow Wind Sage follows as the chapter closes. The secret is the frigging Wind Tamer, which prevents all of his sandstorm attacks.
Alternatively, save the Wind Tamer for the final phase of when he makes his tornado come out. Defeating him earns you the next part of the story and leads you into learning more about this mysterious headless singer.
